CARLSBAD, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- AutoGenomics, a leader in developing automated molecular testing solutions, announced today that a Canadian team comprised of the Canada Research Chair in Medical Genomics, Professor Jacques Corbeil and Canada Research Chair on new viruses and antiviral resistance, Professor Guy Boivin has used its enhanced respiratory virus panel assay to test for the presence of the new Flu A - Swine H1N1 virus. "The assay for research use only detected the presence of both the circulating Flu A strains and the new Flu A - H1N1 strain," said Dr. Corbeil. He further stated that "the assay distinguished the new strain from the others as well as determined the presence of an additional 24 viruses that could potentially co-infect the patients, a factor that may increase the severity of the disease."
"This assay will be of great help in the coming flu seasons and facilitate improving hospital control strategies to understand the role of co- infections in the severity of swine flu cases and enable the selection of antiviral agents in the management of influenza infections," said Dr. Boivin.
The tests, conducted at the CHUL hospital affiliated with Laval University were part of an effort from the Canadian Institute of Health Research to promote research in this area of important societal need.
