AstraZeneca PLC Sued by Medical University of South Carolina for Crestor Patent Infringement

Just a few short months after settling patent challenges to its all-important Crestor cholesterol-lowering pill, AstraZeneca is now facing a fresh lawsuit in which a university claims the drugmaker violated a patent that covers the use of the widely used statin. Specifically, the Medical University of South Carolina Research Foundation claims AstraZeneca willfully ignored warnings that the patent, which is held by one of its distinguished professors, would be violated prior to the start of the 2003 Jupiter clinical trial that was conducted to validate Crestor treatment.
