Andor Webinar Highlights Light Sheet Microscopy For Imaging And Tissue Applications

The Webinar will discuss how Light Sheet microscopy has been used to generate and assemble a 3D image, which can then be applied to learning more about the processes in complex organs, August 20, 2015

Andor, an Oxford Instruments company, presents a new educational webinar, “Light Sheet Microscopy for Tissue Clearing Applications & 3D Live Fluorescent Imaging.” The webinar will be broadcast live on August 20, 2015 at 8am PT.

Speakers include Dr Bi-Chang Chen, an Assistant Research Fellow at Research Center for Applied Science, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He is interested in developing fast, low phototoxicity, multi-color, and 3D detection for fluorescent living specimens with subcellular resolution imaging tools. Dr Alon Greenbaum is a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and is exploring innovative imaging techniques for various neuroscience applications. Dr Orla Hanrahan has worked with Andor Technology as an Application Specialist in Life Science for the past five years. Her role brings her in touch with all the latest developments and innovations in both camera technology and microscopy applications.

Dr Bi-Chang Chen will discuss his research in developing cutting edge imaging tools for 3D live fluorescent microscopy -lattice light sheet microscopy. This will include an in-depth look at how Light Sheet microscopy has been used to generate a series of 2D images on a camera, which can then be assembled into a 3D image. The process is then repeated to build a 4D data set of cellular dynamics. The technology collects high-resolution images rapidly and minimizes damage to cells, meaning it can image the three-dimensional activity of molecules, cells, and embryos in fine detail over longer periods than was previously possible.

In the process of learning about complex organs such as the brain and the gut, it is essential to map their 3D structure with microscopic resolution, and ideally, study them as a whole in order to maintain their structural properties. Dr Alon Greenbaum will present some of the unique properties that light-sheet microscopy has to offer for tissue clearing, as well as discuss the technical challenges encountered while building a custom made light-sheet microscope and their solutions. Dr Orla Hanrahan from Andor Technology will discuss the latest developments in sCMOS technology with an in-depth look at the Zyla 4.2 – the ideal detector for light sheet microscopy. Offering the highest QE, extremely low read noise and fast frame rate, Zyla 4.2 is ideal for a wide range of applications. LightScan PLUS, a new feature on Zyla 4.2, benefits the researcher by increasing contrast and degree of confocality. Extremely high frame rates can be achieved and easy synchronization of the rolling shutter with the scanned illumination beam results in confocal line detection.

A live question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The complementary webinar, hosted by LabRoots, will be presented on August 20, 2015, at 8 am PT.
