Amgen's Exit: Where Will All Those Scientists Go?

When Amgen, the biggest biotech company in the Puget Sound, shutters its Seattle and Bothell facilities by the end of 2015, nearly 300 people will be out of work. While the region is definitely a hub for biotech companies, that's a big influx of scientists and researchers to the job market. It begs the question: Where will they all go? In total, 660 people work at the Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based company's local sites, and some will be relocated or retire when the closure happens. Starting in December and continuing through next year, 274 local Amgen employees – some scientists, support workers and other positions – will face layoffs and will set out on a job hunt.
