Irish drug giant Alkermes has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against a four-year old Boston biotech with a very similar name. Alkermes, a 1,200-employee, 25-year-old company with a research facility in Waltham that makes drugs for diseases of the central nervous system, filed the suit on May 27 against Alkeus Pharmaceuticals. Alkeus touts Josh Boger, founder of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, as its executive chairman. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, claims that the Boston biotech’s name would be easily mistaken for the Irish one’s, especially considering they are both involved in clinical drug development in the Boston area.
