AIBioTech Release: Mitotyping Technologies Scientist Presents "Boy in the Iron Coffin" Case at ISHI

Atlanta, GA - Charity Holland, MPH, will present Mitotyping Technologies’ role in “The Boy in the Iron Coffin” case at the annual International Symposium of Human Identification in Atlanta, Georgia this October. Holland’s talk will take place on Wednesday, October 9, at 2:30pm.

In 2005 a construction crew unearthed an iron coffin in Northwest Washington D.C. dating back to the 1850s. This iron coffin contained the well preserved remains of a teenage boy thought to have attended Columbian College, in what today is known as Columbia Heights (Columbian College was the precursor to George Washington University in what is now Columbia Heights). Determining the boy’s identity became a two year project involving research and DNA testing. Mitotyping Technologies was able to assist researchers at the Smithsonian Institution by performing a mitochondrial DNA analysis and comparison to match the boy to a living decedent and prove his identity.

Mitotyping Technologies will also be exhibiting at the symposium expo (booth 411) with Fairfax Identity Laboratories. Holland will be available at the booth to discuss the case.
