Acumed Release: Microcurrent Point Stimulation For Chronic Back Pain: Incredibly Promising Results

TORONTO, May 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The single leading cause of disability worldwide, lower back pain can devastatingly disrupt a person's life. Affecting mobility, functionality and even the emotional state, the persistence of pain in the lower back is an affliction from which over one half of all working Americans suffer. To date, treatment options have ranged from prescription medication, to physical therapy and acupuncture. The latter, used for ages, has actually had some extremely positive results in terms of helping to reduce the pain associated with chronic lower back issues.

MPS Back Pain Treatment Demonstration

Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) is the newest pain approach combining this centuries-old acupuncture therapy  with bio-response concentrated microcurrent. Essentially this process involves the application of minute levels of Direct Current (DC) stimulation to key acupoints located in the paraspinal lumbar, hips and legs. The intent is to promote pain reduction in the region by causing a shift in the automatic nervous system, reducing STRESS and prompting body-wide therapeutic effects. This is precisely what happened during a recent clinical trial conducted with 68 chronic back pain patients (average age 47) all suffering from this debilitating condition.

All 68 study participants complained of lower back pain for more than 3 months and having experienced a VAS pain index score of greater than 4/10; the group underwent a single MPS treatment. Sixteen (16) lower back acupuncture points were treated using the Dolphin Neurostim, an FDA-cleared device that applies concentrated, microcurrent stimulation for the relief of chronic pain.

The pain scores were recorded before, after and then again two days later. The results were incredibly encouraging and medically significant. In fact, post-treatment VAS scores show patients reported an immediate decrease in average pain  of 62%, plus an additional 30% reduction two days later for a total of 75% pain relief.  The study demonstrates MPS provided significant functional changes beyond pain relief as outcomes increased over time, which is usually not the case.

What this trial shows is that integrating MPS with key acupuncture points for the lower back has a much more significant impact than acupuncture or physical therapy alone, which produce pain outcomes in the 40-50% ranges.

The future of chronic back pain certainly looks to have a very promising treatment option.
