London, 5 March 2008 … The Acrobot Company Limited (Acrobot), computer-assisted surgery specialists, today showcases Acrobot Sculptor®, a new innovation designed to improve surgical accuracy through robotic assistance, for the first time in the US at the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.
Using Acrobot’s key ‘Active Constraint’ technology, the Acrobot Sculptor system confines a bone cutting tool to a defined volume in space, allowing the surgeon to safely and accurately shape the bone to receive a joint replacement implant.
This simple, universally applicable, surgeon-controlled robotic solution can replace conventional instrumentation, enabling better bone preparation and more accurate implant positioning and offering improved efficiency and cost savings. The fact that any shape can be sculpted also offers exciting possibilities for unique implant design with minimal bone removal via minimally invasive techniques. This technology has the potential to revolutionize surgical techniques and radically alter the direction of future implant design and development.

The ‘Active Constraint’ concept was used successfully in a randomized, double blind comparative clinical investigation in partial knee replacement published in 2006 and this work has now been brought to a market ready stage with the evolution of the new Acrobot Sculptor system, which will become commercially available later this year.
