MENLO PARK, Calif., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Acclarent(TM), Inc., in keeping with its mission to foster the development of minimally invasive technologies for the treatment of ear, nose, and throat conditions, is pleased to announce its 2nd Annual Research Training Grant. Acclarent intends to commit up to $75,000 for innovative research projects relating to the advancement of minimally invasive surgery. This program is designed to cultivate research opportunities for surgeons currently enrolled in fellowship programs sponsored by faculty who are members of the American Rhinologic Society.

"Our focus is to advance patient care in all areas of otolaryngology through rigorous clinical research and comprehensive educational programs. We are expanding our commitment in research through the Research Training Grant, while also supporting the future thought leaders in the field of otolaryngology," said Bill Facteau, President and CEO of Acclarent, Inc. "We believe that this is an important step in fostering research for minimally invasive therapies and the outcomes from this work will have the potential to positively affect the lives of millions of patients."

"The Research Training Grant provided by Acclarent enabled our 2006-2007 fellow, Dr. W. Dagher, to train in the science of minimally invasive sinus surgery for treatment of patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. He gained tremendous experience with the Balloon Sinuplasty(TM) technology, and conducted research on the application of surgical navigation in endoscopic sinus surgery utilizing balloon catheters," commented Alan H. Shikani MD, FACS, Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Rhinology Fellowship Program at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Research Training Grant is currently accepting applications for proposals to study minimally invasive concepts for ear, nose, and throat conditions with areas of interest including, but not limited to new applications, indications or cost-effectiveness analyses.
