AAFPRS Unveils 4 Emerging Trends During The AAFPRS Fall Meeting

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) Annual Fall Meeting is hitting a high note in the Music City. From October 6-8, the world’s most eminent facial plastic surgeons will gather in Nashville to showcase the hottest trends and the newest technologies from regenerative medicine to the next generation of energy-based rejuvenation devices and everything in between.

Don’t miss talks and topics include:

Emotional Effects of Facial Plastic Surgery for Transgender Patients

Media attention given to the open transition of Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner, and to high profile transgender celebrities such as Chaz Bono, Laverne Cox, Jenna Talackova, Gigi Gorgeous, and others has raised national awareness of the challenges faced by transgender individuals. The AAFPRS is joining together to address the challenges facing this community.

"Gender affirming surgery goes beyond changing what we see on the surface,” shares Memphis, TN-based facial plastic surgeon Scott Chaiet, MD, Moderator of the Transgender Panel. “This cannot just be construed as cosmetic surgery when it’s been shown that gender affirming procedures statistically increase our patients' quality of life.” The panel will explore surgical training for trans-specific procedures as well as how offices can adapt more inclusive professional protocol.

Non-Surgical Nose Jobs

Nose job techniques are becoming more reliable, predictable, and even less invasive thanks to non-surgical corrections with injectable fillers.

“We will discuss the benefits of varying approaches to the nose, including the endonasal (closed) and external (open) approaches as well as the more recent incorporatioin of non-surgical rhinoplasty techniques using injections of filler,” shares meeting co-chair Rami K. Batniji, MD, a facial plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, CA.

Regenerative Medicine Breakthroughs

Regenerative medicine is here, and facial plastic surgeons are leading the charge into this brave new world. This all-new field of medicine refers to the use of the body’s own cells and growth factors to induce and promote healing. One such technique, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, is changing the way we approach facial rejuvenation and hair restoration.

“We’ve seen a lot of success with PRP in hair transplantation; it’s been proven to make hair grow better and faster when combined with the surgical part of the hair restoration procedure,” shares meeting co-chair Samuel M. Lam, MD, a Plano, Texas-based facial plastic surgeon. “In the last five years, this is changing the industry.”

The Next Generation of Radiofrequency Devices

Patients want minimal downtime with maximum results. In the past, RF energy was passed through the skin, leaving it in tact. Today, percutaneous RFis delivered deep down in the dermis to more effectively to improve the tightening and appearance of skin.

“We went from very aggressive laser therapies to fractional RF,” says Dr. Lam. “Now there is a move toward a hybrid.”
