$40 Add-on Turns Smartphone Into An Oximeter, University of British Columbia Reveals

The Phone Oximeter is a smartphone app developed by two British Columbia scientists as an affordable solution for the measurement of oxygen levels in the blood, an important early warning sign for pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, and for pneumonia. “We are building predictive health care,” Mark Ansermino told the Vancouver Sun's Gillian Shaw. Ansermino, who is director of research for pediatric anesthesia at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital (BCCH) and associate professor in the University of British Columbia (UBC)’s department of anesthesia, developed the Phone Oximeter with Guy Dumont, UBC professor of electrical and computer engineering.
