Arthritis Foundation To Sponsor Juvenile Arthritis Camp

10/19/2005 5:10:54 PM

ISELIN, N.J., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter will sponsor Camp CHAT (Children Have Arthritis, Too!) from Sunday, July 11 through July 16, 2004. Camp CHAT is held at Easter Seals Camp Hemlocks in Hebron, Connecticut, but is open to New Jersey youth between the ages of 6 and 17 years who have arthritis and rheumatic disease, including lupus, scleroderma and ankolysing spondylitis. Registration is now open and limited to 75 campers.

While a parental contribution is requested, The New Jersey Chapter awards scholarships to any families who require financial assistance. Enrollment is limited to 75 campers; registration is on first-come, first serve basis. Interested persons should contact the Arthritis Foundation New Jersey Chapter office at 1-888-467-3112 or before June 1, 2004 to request a registration packet.

This is the second annual summer camp sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter. The weeklong session is planned around the particular medical needs of children with arthritis and rheumatic disease. The accent is on what the campers do, not what they can't do. The children are given the opportunity to have a typical camping experience despite medical problems or physical limitations. A trained camp staff is sensitive to the children's special needs, and young adults with arthritis serve as peer group leaders.

The Arthritis Foundation is the only nationwide, nonprofit health organization helping people take greater control of arthritis by leading efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis and related diseases. Arthritis affects over one in three adults, two million in NJ, and is not a normal condition of age. People with arthritis must take early action, getting a diagnosis from a physician and using a physician's treatment plan to prevent this progressive, debilitating disease from impacting their quality of life. AFNJ is the central resource for information about physician referrals and physical/educational programs in New Jersey.
