There is currently great interest in the development and use of stem cells for numerous applications of tissue regeneration. The most versatile stem cells are embryonic stem cells, which are derived from fertilized eggs. However, the use of human embryonic stem cells is controversial. Other types of stem cells from adult organisms are being intensely studied to determine their therapeutic potential and capability to form more than one tissue type.
