10/19/2005 5:11:02 PM

ATLANTA, April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Ten North Carolina biotechnology companies will make presentations at the East Coast's investor conference for venture stage biotechnology and healthcare firms in May. The North Carolina Biosciences Organization, in collaboration with eleven other state life science associations and BIOTECanada, is partnering with the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) to host BIO VentureForum East 2005 May 9-11, 2005, in Atlanta. The conference, to be held at the InterContinental Hotel-Buckhead, will bring together venture capitalists with promising, seed, early- and late-stage private biotechnology companies from across the country.

"Our state has long played a vital role in the biotech and life sciences industries on the East Coast. We anticipate that this conference will have a tremendous impact on the continued growth of these industries in the region," said NCBIO Executive Vice President Sam Taylor. "We are particularly pleased that so many North Carolina companies are taking advantage of this opportunity to get in front of some of the industry's most active venture capitalist firms."

The conference has attracted top-tier speakers. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue will welcome conference participants to a plenary session on Tuesday, May 10th, at 8:15am. Also on Tuesday, Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach, director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), will give the keynote luncheon address at 12pm.

BIO VentureForum will also feature workshops on financing and partnering trends in the biotechnology industry, networking receptions, and presentations by up to 120 biotech companies selected by an advisory board of equity capital leaders. North Carolina companies selected thus far to present include: Argos Therapeutics, Inc., Asklepios BioPharmaceutical, Inc., Athenix Corp., Biolex, Inc., BioLink Life Sciences, Inc., Erimos Pharmaceuticals, LLC, Nobex Corporation, Qualyst, Inc. and StemCo Biomedical Inc.
