Nellcor Release: Anesthesiology Courses Highlight Respiratory Risks For Patients With Undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea

10/19/2005 5:11:17 PM

PLEASANTON, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Nellcor, the market leader and global innovator of intelligent pulse oximetry solutions, today announced that Jonathan L. Benumof, MD, a leading expert in airway management, will present two upcoming courses on the postoperative management of obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The courses, titled "Obesity, Sleep Apnea, the Airway and Anesthesia," will be presented at the Dannemiller 29th Specialty Review Course in Anesthesiology, May 8-14, 2004 in Chicago, IL, and the Dannemiller 51st Annual Anesthesiology Review Course, June 12-18, 2004 in San Antonio, Texas. For more information visit http://www.dannemiller.com/

According to Dr. Benumof, 80 percent to 90 percent of adult, obese patients with OSA are currently undiagnosed. Lack of diagnosis for obese patients scheduled for surgery can lead to disastrous respiratory outcomes during the perioperative period including intubation failure, respiratory obstruction soon after extubation, or respiratory arrest following narcotic and sedative medication.

During the first three days of the postoperative period, these patients are at an increased risk for life-threatening apnea due to high levels of analgesics required to control pain. In the three days that follow, a patient's REM sleep rebounds, increasing the risk of natural deep-sleep induced apnea. To help manage the respiratory status of obese, OSA patients, Dr. Benumof urges anesthesiologists to consider the need for continuous visual and electronic respiratory monitoring during the postoperative period.

"The Nellcor(R) Oxinet(R) system is certainly a step in the right direction," said Dr. Benumof. "We currently have what I call an 'all or nothing' system in the United States, if not the world. Patients are given either a high level of electronic and human monitoring, or they are sent to an isolated wardroom or sent home with no monitoring at all. Technology can help bridge the gap and create a middle ground where either the caregiver is brought closer to the patient, or the patient is brought closer to the caregiver. This is what a system like Oxinet does - it brings the two together and creates a middle ground for the millions of patients that need more than a 'nothing' situation, but less than an 'all' situation."

Designed specifically for the General Care Floor, the Oxinet III Central Station and Paging System provides continuous central station monitoring of up to 24 Nellcor standalone pulse oximeters, including the OxiMax(R) N-595 Pulse Oximeter, part of Nellcor's latest technology platform. With the Oxinet III system, bedside patient data is communicated via a wireless or hardwire link to a central monitoring station. Clinicians are alerted to developing respiratory events by bedside alarms supplemented with remote alarm notification at both a central nursing station and through a paging system. Clinicians also have the ability to view patient data on a wireless PDA.
