SAN DIEGO, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Angstrom Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of cancer and eye disease, announced today the initiation of a Phase 2 clinical trial of its proprietary lead product, A6, for the prevention of clinical relapse in patients with ovarian cancer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The study will enroll 48-60 patients and is designed to assess the safety and efficacy of A6 in asymptomatic women in clinical remission who have an elevated CA-125 tumor marker level following successful first line treatment.
"We are very pleased to have the University of Alabama at Birmingham participating in the A6 trial," said Virgil Thompson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Angstrom. "Our pre-clinical data show that A6 prevents metastases and inhibits tumor growth in animal models. We also have encouraging responses in some patients with advanced gynecologic cancer in our Phase 1 trial. This Phase 2 trial is designed to demonstrate the potential of our drug to forestall progression of ovarian cancer in women at high risk."
According to the American Cancer Society over 25,000 American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 16,000 die from the disease every year. Currently only 25% of ovarian cancer cases are detected at the localized stage. Therefore the majority of patients will have Stage III or IV disease at the time of diagnosis and are at a high risk for relapse and disease progression following successful first line treatment.
Angstrom Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (http://www.angstrominc.com/) is a privately held pharmaceutical company located in San Diego, CA. Angstrom's drug, A6, targets the urokinase plasminogen activator system, which has been implicated in cancer progression. Preclinical studies have shown that A6 inhibits cell migration and cell invasion and blocks the supply of blood to tumors. In Phase 1 studies, daily injections of A6 were shown to be safe and well tolerated.
