NEW ORLEANS, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Cancer Coalition (NCC) announces the donation of $3 million worth of cancer medicines and essential pharmaceuticals to assist the needy in Paraguay.

A hand-over ceremony was held in Asuncion to recognize NCC's donation of medical goods. Paraguayan Health Minister Julio Valezquez, NCC President Robert Landry, and USAID Paraguay Director Wayne Nilsestuen participated in the hand-over ceremony, which was extensively covered by the Paraguayan media. A delegation also toured the children's pediatric cancer hospital that received some of the donated medicines.

Robert B. Landry, III, President & CEO of National Cancer Coalition stated, "We are pleased to assist Paraguay as it improves cancer treatment provided to its citizens. NCC has made a number of significant donations to the public hospitals of Paraguay that serve needy cancer patients."

Landry added that creating awareness for individuals to seek care and early detection of cancer is important in a country like Paraguay. NCC is working closely with local public hospitals and the Paraguayan media to alert the public that specific cancer medicines are now available free of charge for needy individuals with cancer.

"With almost 60 percent of its population living at or under the poverty line, Paraguay is in great need of humanitarian assistance. Our donations include medications for treatment of breast cancer and various types of solid tumors. In addition, we provide essential antibiotics for treatment of these patients that are quite susceptible to infections, because of their weakened immune systems."

Since initiating its program in Paraguay, NCC has provided over $3 million in cancer medicines and essential pharmaceuticals to the country's public cancer hospitals. Landry stated that NCC opened an office in the capital city of Asuncion in October 2004 to support its expanding program within Paraguay.

NCC, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation headquartered in New Orleans, LA, supports cancer research and undertakes educational, prevention and medical relief programs throughout the world. Through its Angel Grants program, NCC supports cutting-edge cancer research in the United States.

NCC's international medical assistance program, termed "NCC Cares," provides requested pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and hospital supplies to public hospitals and local humanitarian organizations that help the needy in over 20 developing countries around the world. The Coalition also distributes educational materials and sponsors community health screenings.
