Sorenson Genomics, LLC Awarded ISO Certification

10/19/2005 5:10:28 PM

State-of-the-Art Genetics Laboratory is Now the Only Facility Accredited by the National Forensic Science Technology Center to do DNA Testing for Genealogical Purposes

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 2004-- Sorenson Genomics announced today it has been awarded ISO-IEC 17025 certification by the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC). ISO (International Organization for Standards) certification is awarded to companies that demonstrate adherence to comprehensive management and quality control guidelines recognized worldwide.

By achieving ISO laurels, Sorenson Genomics becomes one of only four national laboratories accredited for genetic testing by both the NFSTC and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the only facility accredited to do DNA testing for genealogical purposes.

Genetic testing as a tool in genealogy--or ancestry research--is a new, growing industry. Today's announcement means "when we assist individuals who are investigating their family tree, who encounter roadblocks in their family history research, or who are just looking for relationship links, they can be assured of the integrity of our laboratory systems and the accuracy of our test results," said D. Tod Schulthess, president and COO of Sorenson Genomics.

"Our ISO certification is comprehensive," said Chris Harmston, quality and safety manager at Sorenson Genomics. "It ensures we have a quality system and documented processes in place all the way from the first customer contact through laboratory equipment calibration to finally reporting validated test results." In addition to Sorenson Genomics' direct-to-consumer DNA testing services, the ISO certification covers the facility's large DNA analysis projects for biotech, pharmaceutical and academic institutions. Sorenson Genomics performs genetic testing for over 100 account customers representing 15 countries around the world including GeneTree China, Japan Genomics, DNA Bioscience U.K., and the Medical Genetics Center in Egypt.

In addition to accreditation by the NFSTC and the AABB, Sorenson Genomics validates its Y chromosome and identity products through participation in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Materials, and its parentage testing through the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing Program.
