SAN DIEGO, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Almirall Prodesfarma, S.A., the leading Spanish multinational pharmaceutical company which is based in Barcelona, Spain, for A2A receptor antagonists for Parkinson's Disease. Under the terms of the agreement, Almirall and Neurocrine will share territorial rights and registration data from their respective territories for products identified during the research term. The compounds licensed from Almirall are selective small molecule A2A receptor antagonists that have shown efficacy in preclinical models of Parkinson's disease. A2A is a subtype of receptors for the neuromodulator adenosine, highly co-localized with the D2 subtype of dopamine receptors in areas of the brain where a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine produces the classic symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that selective A2A receptor antagonists relieve Parkinsonian symptoms as monotherapy and, when given in combination with the standard treatment L-DOPA, can augment the beneficial effects of this therapy, while reducing dyskinesias, a troubling side effect of L-DOPA therapy.
