Carl Zeiss Co. Ltd. Acquires Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc.'s (BIO) Laser Scanning Microscopy Business

THORNWOOD, N.Y., June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH announced today the acquisition of the U.K. based Cell Science Division from Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. , effective June 1st, 2004. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. Bio-Rad Cell Science Division is a pioneer in developing and commercializing confocal microscopy and multi-photon technology.

"Today, Carl Zeiss stands for high-end laser scanning microscopes that are benchmark solutions for advanced applications in 3-D microscopy," says Dr. Ulrich Simon, head of the microscopy business group at Carl Zeiss. "Joining our forces will strengthen our relationship with Zeiss and Bio-Rad customers, and will allow a considerable additional refinement of both companies world-wide service and support network."

This strategic move is part of the ongoing investment in enhancing the application expertise at Carl Zeiss. Our mission is to bring together technological and application know-how to provide support and solutions dedicated to the application needs in modern biomedical research. The concentration of expertise and creativity gained by the acquisition will not only be beneficial for existing customers. It is expected to accelerate future advances in confocal and multi-photon microscope instrumentation with Carl Zeiss as the major driving force in the field.
