The shutdown of the US government has many repercussions that are almost immeasurable and hit US citizens from every direction. But a quartet of them stands out for their potential to pose a threat to public health because they’ll allow microbes to gain footholds as our defenses against them falter. First, there’s the US Food and Drug Administration. Evidently, when the government doesn’t pay the bill, we don’t get inspections of our food supply, enforcement of adherence to regulations, monitoring of imports into the country, or lab research that supports FDA’s decisions regarding public health.
